  • The Gateway PGA Slice of Life event held on Friday, August 22 was good to COGC Staff Professionals Brian Laur and Brian Norman.  Brian Laur aced the 172 yard sixteenth hole while Brian Norman won the event with a four under par 66.  Proud of you guys!!
  • Congratulations to COGC Members, Andrea and Scott Burzynski, on the birth of their first child, a little girl.  Emma Kay was born on July 24 weighing in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces, 20 inches long.  
  • Condolences to COGC Member, Bob Bandy, on the recent death of his mother.  COGC has Bob and his family on our mind.
  • Condolences to COGC Clubhouse staff member, Ron Oakley, on the recent death of his mother.   Our thoughts are with Ron and his family.
  • Way to go.........Director of Golf, Steve Heckel, is first alternate for the United States Sr. Open Championship to be held later this month at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.  We are crossing fingers, legs, and eyes hoping he gets in.
  • Congratuations to Barb Harris, Flag Day winner.  Fred Koller took second and Jimmy Blades captured the booby prize.
  • Congratulations to Jan Jackman on a hole in one on June 29.  Jan aced the tenth hole with a driver into a stiff wind.  Enjoying the big moment with her was Nancy Sorgen, Karen Parrish, and Joan Schullian.
  • 2008 Ladies Spring Fling winners--The event was won by Cassie and Carol Rushing with a 4 under par, 67.  COGC Members winning were: April Lamb, JoAnn Galloway, Jan Jackman, Janice Lingle, Bev Roland, Sally Parrish, Terri Hanley, Rhea Hasemeyer, Adeline Walker, Barb Finney, and Lola Bird.  Congrats, girls.
  • Congratulations to COGC Member, Stan Copeland, on his 50th wedding anniversary.  Must be all the time he spends playing golf that has contributed to the many years together.
  • Congratulations to COGC Jr., Ryan Hudson!  Ryan, 18, won an event on the Plantation Junior Golf Tour recently.
  • Joining one of COGC's most active golf families is Alexis Lauryn Pate.  Alexis was born on April 18.  She was 19.5 inches long and  weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces.  She is the daughter of  Scott and Alicia Pate and first grandchild of  Steve and Jean Pate.  Congratulations!
  • Welcome to the COGC family, Noah Grant Brookhouse.  Noah was born on Leap Day, Feb. 29.   He joins brother, Alex, and proud parents Darren and Christi Brookhouse.  
  • Congratulations to staff member, Rhonda Radford, on the birth of her second grandchild, Tyler James Radford.  Tyler will join cousin, Whitney, having a great time with Grandma.
  • Much sadness came to COGC on Monday, January 28 with the passing of President and Owner, Phil Heckel.  Services were held on January 31.  Phil made a difference in the lives of everyone here at the club and will be sorely missed.
  • Crab Orchard Golf Club extends sympathy to the families of Bob Pryor and Don Head in their recent passing.  Bob was a member of our maintenance staff for many years.  Don was a long time member.  Both will be sorely missed.
  • Welcome to the COGC family, Isabel Moore.  Isabel was born on January 12th to proud parents Tyson and Melissa Moore.   She was 21 inches long and weighed in at 8 lbs. 6 oz. 
  • Aces continue to fill the holes at COGC.  Congratulations to Bob Privett on his hole in one on #16 during the Phil Heckel Invitational Team Championship.  Bob hit a #7 iron for the 137 yard shot.  Witnesses included his teammates Kent Parrish, Mark Parrish, and Brad Mausey.
  • Congratulations to the Carterville High School boy's golf team.  They placed 2nd in the IHSA Regional Championship and will advance to the IHSA Sectional Championship on October 9th.  Good luck, boys, we are proud of you!
  • COGC wishes Member Gene Turner a quick recovery.  Gene broke his arm while playing golf in the rain recently.  We are quite sure he can still enjoy one of his favorite activities which only requires one arm while he is in rehab.
  • Crab Orchard Golf Club's Cup Team took the coveted SIGA Nancy Scranton Cup title on Sunday at Franklin County Country Club.  It was a wire to wire finish with COGC taking a 3 shot lead following the first round on Saturday at Crab Orchard and expanding it into a 6 shot win.  Congratulations to team members Robin Lester, Vicky Gentry, Karen Parrish, and Sarah Haas. 
  • Congratulations to 9 year old Jacob Eckland on his first career hole in one.  It came September 19th on the 165 yard tenth hole.  Witnessing the ace was Director of Golf, Steve Heckel, who was giving Jacob a golf lesson.  Anybody else want to sign up for lessons?
  • Congratulations to 2007 Club Champions--Men's Stroke Play, Joe Davidson.  Women's Stroke Play, Robin Lester.  Men's Match Play, Ernie Gwaltney.  Good going on this fine accomplishment.
  • COGC enjoyed Alice Cooper as a special guest on Saturday, August 25.  Alice was in the area to do a concert at the DuQuoin State Fair.  Staff members, Brian Laur and Sarah Haas had the opportunity to play golf with him.   He is an avid golfer and played very well.  We are all hoping he will join us again someday.
  • Congratulations to Zach Barlow, 2007 Dippin' Dots Amateur Champion.  Zach is a University of Illinois Golf Team Member and the 2004 IHSA State Champion.  We are proud to add Zach to a very elite list of players who can call themselves Dippin' Dots Amateur Champion.
  • Congratulations to new COGC Match Play Club Champion, Ernie Gwaltney.  Ernie bested Bill Mau to take the title with a 6 & 4 victory.  Winning A Flight was Brent Broshow who beat Tyson Moore 3 & 2.  Good playing, guys!  
  • Midsummer Scramble winning team was Terry Hanley, Mike Kinley, Jim Jenkins, and Kay Egelston with a score of ten under par, 60.  Taking second in a playoff was Bob Rigdon, Bruce Hasemeyer, and Richard Adams.  Congratulations!
  • Congratulations to COGC Member, Ed West, on his second career hole in one.  The ace came on July 20 on the 7th hole playing at 185 yards.  Ed used a new #4 hybrid that he had just bought in the golf shop at COGC.
  • Congratulations to COGC Member, Ray Kemp, who had a double eagle on the par 5 fifth hole on Wednesday, July 18.  Ray hit a #5 wood in the hole to accomplish this very rare feat. 
  • Congratulations to COGC Director of Golf, Steve Heckel, who tied for first place in the Gateway PGA Callaway Pro Am held at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis on July 16.   His team of John Nugent, Dr. Bob Golz, and Bill Woods also finished in the money.
  • Congratulations to COGC Director of Golf, Steve Heckel, who won the Sr. Division of the Gateway PGA's Southern Illinois Open held at Rend Lake on July 9. 
  • The Pro/Member was won by the team of Mike Fisher, Fred Koller, Jeff Chatham, and COGC Pro, Steve Heckel with a score of 119.  Low round of the tournament was a 66 from John Danielson.
  • Congratulations to Flag Day Winners--Jan Jackman took first place.  Jan Cobb finished second and Robin Lester took third.
  • Member, Marsha Talley, made a hole in one on the 114 yard 4th hole on Saturday, June 30.  Congrats Marsha!
  • Member, Dr. Joe Karmos, aced the 193 yard 10th hole on June 20.  Congrats, Dr. Joe!
  • Member, Mike Bush, made his first hole in one recently while visiting his daughter's family in Tennessee.  Congratulations, Mike.
  • Staff Member, Sarah Haas, aced the 108 yard eighth hole on June 1. 
  • Welcome Sarah Isabella Reynolds to the COGC family.  Sarah was born to COGC Staff Member, Laura, and husband, Rob, on Sunday, June 3.
